Canon scanner doesn’t work in Leopard

After upgrading to Leopard, my CanoScan LiDE 60 scanner stopped working. This wasn’t much of a surprise; I figured I’d have to download a new driver after upgrading. What was a surprise, though, was how long it took to get the new driver to work!

Apple outlines the steps for installing the driver in Canon CanoScan scanners unable to scan. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t tell you that you must remove the previous driver before installing the new one. Nor is this mentioned on the Canon web site.

If you don’t remove the previous driver, the ScanGear installer will hang during the install process. If you force the installer to quit and try to use the scanner, you’ll get the following error:

The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or the settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed.

Fortunately, Canon provides a utility for removing the previous CanoScan driver. For the CanoScan LiDE 60, the uninstaller can be found in the disk image deldrvosx1510en.dmg, which is available from the scanner’s Drivers & Downloads page. Note that you will need to unplug the scanner’s USB cable during the uninstall process.

  1. I am having problems installing my scanner. I removed the old drive. I installed the CanoScan Toolbox. But now I don’t know what path to give the driver installation to install. What path did you use?

  2. Brian–I don’t recall the installer asking for a path for the driver. I think the driver is supposed to be installed before CanoScan Toolbox, though.

  3. I am disgusted with Canon; it’s clear from reading on the Internet that the Lide60 will not work with Leopard on a PPC based Mac. No matter what the user does, it does not work, and apparently Canon couldn’t care less.

I have seen no work around and the only alternative is to buy a new scanner. You can be sure it won’t be a Canon. I wish Apple would start making scanners that worked seamlessly with their OS.

  4. I had the same problem with a Canon Lide 80 after installing Leopard on my father’s iMac. After searching various forums, I saw a recommendation a software program called VueScan. http://www.hamrick.com/
I downloaded the trial and it immediately recognized the scanner and i was able to scan. No install hassles, it was all automatic. In addition, it is a much easier piece of software to use. Downside is that it costs $40 but that is better than the hassle I was going through or buying a new scanner.
